It's not so much to do with how hard you tap the bark as how much of the surface is tapped to separate the layers. Most types of willow will work during the spring and summer months when the sap is rising, although Willow can have growth nodes on the surface of the bark which can make removal tricky. You may also have more success with Sycamore or other trees from the maple family, particularly suckers or secondary growth shoots from the base of trees.

You should be able to make whistles from any willow shoot, particularly those from coppiced or pollarded trees. However, you may have more success using Maple in montreal, look for straight secondary growth shoots at the base of trees and regrowth from trees that have been felled.
